Concussion & Post-Trauma

Post-Concussion Syndrome

Symptoms continuing well beyond the expected recovery window after a concussion.

Also called: Persistent post-concussive symptoms.

Concussion is a medical condition that is diagnosed and managed medically. Where symptoms continue beyond the usual recovery window, neck, balance, and visual-motion findings are frequently present alongside the original injury and can be evaluated within chiropractic scope.

This does not mean chiropractic care treats the concussion itself. It means that specific, measurable pieces of the wider picture — neck position sense, eye movement coordination, and balance — can be assessed and worked with directly.

Why this matters

Being told to rest and wait is difficult when symptoms are not settling on their own. A functional evaluation gives something concrete to look at rather than leaving a person with only reassurance.

Many people with persisting symptoms feel caught between feeling unwell and being told all major tests are normal. Looking specifically at neck and balance-related contributors can add useful, practical information.

The brain & nervous-system connection

Where the nervous system fits in

Neck position sense, eye movement, and balance work together as an integrated system, and all three are commonly affected after head and neck trauma. Assessing them individually and together helps clarify where symptoms are coming from.

This kind of evaluation looks at how these systems are functioning now — it does not diagnose or grade the concussion itself, which remains a medical determination.

What we look at

We look for patterns, not a single test

  • Detailed health history and consultation
  • NeuroInfiniti Stress Response Evaluation
  • Posture and movement
  • Balance and coordination testing
  • Eye movement or neurological screening when appropriate
  • Grip or motor-function testing when appropriate
  • Palpation and spinal function
  • Other examination procedures based on the individual

Not every person receives every test. What we perform depends on your history, your age and what the examination shows as we go.

Scope of care

What this does — and doesn't — mean

What we do

  • We evaluate chiropractic and musculoskeletal function.
  • We look at nervous-system-related functional findings that fall within our scope.
  • We assess movement, balance and coordination findings.
  • We measure stress-response patterns with the NeuroInfiniti evaluation.
  • We make individualized chiropractic care recommendations and re-measure over time.

What we don't claim

  • We do not diagnose, treat or cure diseases.
  • Chiropractic care is not a treatment for dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other neurological diseases.
  • Chiropractic care is not a replacement for medical care, testing or medication.
  • No outcome is promised. Results vary from person to person.

This is a concern where medical evaluation, imaging or co-management may be the right first step. Dr. Mike Geran will say so plainly if that is what the history and examination suggest.

Common questions

Can chiropractic care treat post-concussion syndrome?
No. Concussion is medically diagnosed and managed. We evaluate related neck, balance, and eye-movement findings that may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.
When should I see a physician instead of, or before, coming in?
Any new or worsening symptoms after head injury need medical attention first. Ongoing symptoms should always be under medical follow-up alongside anything we evaluate.

When medical evaluation may be needed

Concussion must be medically assessed and managed. We do not diagnose or treat concussion; we evaluate related neck, balance and coordination findings.

  • Worsening headache, repeated vomiting, or increasing confusion
  • Slurred speech, weakness, or seizure
  • Loss of consciousness or worsening drowsiness after head injury
