Spine, Back & Neck

Scoliosis-Related Pain & Mobility Problems

Discomfort and movement restriction associated with a curved spine.

Also called: Scoliosis.

Chiropractic care does not correct a structural scoliosis. What can be evaluated is how the spine is moving, where load is concentrated, and what is contributing to discomfort or stiffness.

Curves vary widely in size, location and how much they affect a person day to day, and two people with a similar-looking curve can have very different experiences of it.

Why this matters

Comfort with sitting, sport and daily activity is usually the practical goal, alongside appropriate monitoring by the relevant medical specialist.

Muscle fatigue and uneven loading on one side of the body are common complaints that can be worked with, even when the underlying curve itself is not something care will change.

The brain & nervous-system connection

Where the nervous system fits in

Asymmetric spinal movement changes the position information reaching the brain, which can show up in balance and coordination testing.

The evaluation looks at how the body is compensating around the curve, since these compensations are often what can be influenced even when the curve itself is not.

What we look at

We look for patterns, not a single test

  • Detailed health history and consultation
  • NeuroInfiniti Stress Response Evaluation
  • Posture and movement
  • Balance and coordination testing
  • Eye movement or neurological screening when appropriate
  • Grip or motor-function testing when appropriate
  • Palpation and spinal function
  • Other examination procedures based on the individual

Not every person receives every test. What we perform depends on your history, your age and what the examination shows as we go.

Scope of care

What this does — and doesn't — mean

What we do

  • We evaluate chiropractic and musculoskeletal function.
  • We look at nervous-system-related functional findings that fall within our scope.
  • We assess movement, balance and coordination findings.
  • We measure stress-response patterns with the NeuroInfiniti evaluation.
  • We make individualized chiropractic care recommendations and re-measure over time.

What we don't claim

  • We do not diagnose, treat or cure diseases.
  • Chiropractic care is not a treatment for dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other neurological diseases.
  • Chiropractic care is not a replacement for medical care, testing or medication.
  • No outcome is promised. Results vary from person to person.

This is a concern where medical evaluation, imaging or co-management may be the right first step. Dr. Mike Geran will say so plainly if that is what the history and examination suggest.

Common questions

Is this something chiropractic care can help with?
We can help with comfort, movement and compensation patterns around a scoliosis. We do not claim to reduce or correct the curve itself, and medical monitoring stays part of the picture.

When medical evaluation may be needed

Scoliosis in a growing child should be monitored medically. We do not claim to reduce curves, and we will say plainly when specialist assessment is the right next step.

  • Rapid progression of the curve, especially in a growing child
  • New numbness, weakness, or bowel or bladder changes
